I'm starting an NGO or non-profit — is a Sdn Bhd right?
Usually not. Non-profits typically register either as a society with the Registrar of Societies or as a Company Limited by Guarantee — a CLBG has no share capital and applies income to its objects rather than distributing profit. A Sdn Bhd is built to distribute profit to shareholders.
Statutory figures: Companies Act 2016 Societies Act 1966
Also asked as: register ngo malaysia; company limited by guarantee; persatuan vs syarikat; non profit registration malaysia.
CLBG registration requires ministerial approval and takes longer than an ordinary incorporation. We'll tell you which register fits and refer societies to the ROS route where that's simpler.
