How does a company get Bumiputera status?
Bumiputera status is certified against thresholds covering equity ownership, board composition, management and often staffing — commonly requiring Bumiputera shareholding and control at or above a stated majority. It is assessed by the certifying body relevant to your registration (MOF for procurement categories, CIDB for construction), not by SSM.

Because the test looks at shareholding and directorship, the structure decided at incorporation determines eligibility from day one — a company set up without this in mind often needs restructuring, which is slower and dearer than getting it right initially.
